We've all done it. We've all gone out to the lake or the creek or the stream with Dad. But what does that really mean? How is your experience with Dad any different than any other fisherman? Easy – it just is.

Fishing is, and always has been, a family thing. Besides being a great way to bond with your Pops, fishing teaches so many lifelong lessons, especially when you're willing to open up your eyes and ears and pay attention.

First and foremost, fishing teaches you discipline and skill. Trust us, it may seem easy to do, but there's so much more to fishing than meets the eye. It's a calculated science and one that many Dads try to master so that they can show their kids how it's done. Remember when your Dad told you his secrets to making a great catch?

Fishing also has a great sense of adventure. When you're young, you look at a fishing trip as a chance to get out and explore. As you put on your overalls, rubber boots, and floppy hat, you're not just getting ready. You're dressing for the challenge and the journey. You'll wade through muck and search for underwater worlds. You may even have your first run-in with some live bait. No matter what adventure, just know that fishing is full of chances for one.

Finally, fishing with Dad teaches you responsibility. It wasn't just something to do. It was an honor to get to come along. You had to listen. You had to behave. As a result, you learned how valuable it is to just do what you're told. It'll catch you a fish – and leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

Safety, in all activities, comes first, so it's important for every fisherman to take some time to educate himself on the what to do's and what not to do's when it comes time to hit the waters. While most safety tips come as common sense, there's still always a chance that there'll be some guy, somewhere, that'll forget about what he's been told his whole life when it comes to fishing and then something bad happens. Don't be the guy. Take some time today to remember a few of these simple beginner tips for fishing:

  1. Try not to fish alone – you never know what could happen – but, if you do have to go on your own, make sure to bring a long a cell phone and always tell at least one or two other people where you are and what you're doing.

  2. Don't drink and fish. While some may think this is pretty common, it can prove to be deadly should you try to operate a vehicle or a boat before, during, or after your fishing trip. Save the celebration for after you've gotten home.

  3. Don't just go anywhere to fish. Make sure that you know the rules of the area, are in line with the laws, and aren't in unfamiliar territory. It pays to know where you are and what you're doing.

You have to look at your tackle box the way a mechanic looks at his toolbox. Sure, you may be able to fix something with one tool, but that doesn't always guarantee that one tool can fix all of your problems. The same thought can be applied to your tackle box. When you're looking to catch a specific type of fish, or if you're fishing in a specific environment, be sure that you've got the right tool for the job by adding a variety of baits and lures into your tackle box so that you're always prepared.

So how can you decide what's best for your box? The key is really in preference and experience. One season, you may have caught a ton of bass using cheap plastic worms. In another, it was a $10 lure that caught you the big one. Be sure that you're trying out different strategies and stick to those that work. Remember, no two fishermen fish alike. Just be sure that you're choosing bait that you're experienced with. You wouldn't try to master the piano if you've never seen one, right? So think of the same principle when it comes to choose the right tackle. Know what you're working with and know what you're using. Only then can you master them well enough to catch your fish.

Fall is not the time to be putting away your fishing rods and packing away your tackle box till warmer temperatures come round. (Plus, you won't want to miss our posts on ice fishing in the coming months.) Anyway, don't rule cooler temps and fall weather as being the end to your fishing enjoyment. Fall is a pleasant time to hit the waters and enjoy the scenery and most importantly, hook a nice fish!

As winter nears, many fish gorge on food supplies so that they can get them ready for the winter. As they skim the tops of the water looking for food, this potentially gives fisherman an easier shot at reeling in a good catch. The water temperatures will soon become cooler on lakes and open waters, so fish will resort to smaller bodies of water such as rivers and creeks. Hit the shady, hidden spots on the waters and you're sure to find them hiding there. Make sure to switch out your bait and lures during the shift in your fishing patterns for fall. During this season, the food sources that hatched in the spring will be reaching mature size, so you may want to try out larger bait to get the job done.

Fish are in an aggressive feeding pattern during the fall, so take advantage of these patterns and you may just reeling the the catch of your life!

Fall is here and you know what that means: it's the perfect time for fishing.

Fall fishing is great for bass, crappie, hybrids, stripers, and other swimming critters that inhabit your favorite waters. The key is to know when they're at their best and when the time is right to go out there and start catching them. Not sure where to begin? Here are a few tips on how to stay on top of the best of fall fishing:

First off, learn about the fish you'd like to catch. Knowing your waters is one thing, but knowing about the fish in them is quite another. Take some time this fall to research the behaviors and patterns of native species in your area. Your local library is sure to have some info, as well as your local department of wildlife or conservation. Plus, there's always the net for finding things out, but just make sure that your facts are coming from a reliable source.

Depending on where you live – or where you fish – there are various fishing laws and regulations. Be sure that you keep on top of them before you head out to reel in the big one. Usually you can find these out by checking with the same places where you got your fishing license or by looking online for both state and local laws.

Finally, make sure that you have all the right gear by checking out the selection at FishFreakOnline.com. We're stocked with everything you need to catch your bass, crappie, or striper. Depending on what you're fishing for, we've got the right bait, reels, poles, and even apparel to keep you prepared, comfortable, and ready to catch anything.
